University of the South |
This zone displays the establishment process of University of the South or the present Prince of Songkla University, with the aim of it becoming an instrument for local development, a solution to the problem of a lack of place to study and the problem of having to send students to study abroad, as well as an institution to produce professionals in engineering according to the First National Economic and Social Development Plan. Major Thanat Khoman, the Minister of Foreign Affairs was the Chair of the board to establish the university and Prof. Dr. Stang Monkolsuk, an expert in education, was the major driving force. The establishment of the university was in 3 phases: 1) establishing a college to be expanded and developed into a university, 2) establishing a university with the center in Pattani Province and faculties scattered in different provinces in the south and 3) establishing a state university under an Act, as in other government sectors, so as to be able to recruit teachers and personnel, immediately. This third phase of development enabled the board to establish the Faculty of Engineering in 1967. |
